Carmine's Pizza closes its doors for Good! PDF Print E-mail

(Carmine holds a card children made for him from one of his pizza boxes!)

This is one of those stories that impacts me personally!

My daughter is a very picky eater.  Essentially, there was a time in our lives when about the only thing she would eat was Carmine's Pizza!

So, our bi-weekly visits there soon made us part of the family! From Nate, to Carmine's wife Mary, Carmine's pizza in Elmwood next to the legendary Elmwood bakery, wasn't just a place to eat, it was a place to visit with family.

Carmine made everyone feel that way.

That's why when he called me to personally tell me he was shutting down, I was both shocked and sadden. Times are tough, as we all know, and apparently the rent was too high and kept going up. Plus, The October snow storm really knocked Carmine off his feet. For two weeks, he wasn't able to open his Pizza shop because, like so many of us here in West Hartford, he had no power!

Carmine, never really recovered.

Next time I drive by my old stopping grounds, I'll remember Carmine talking about the Old Country, his secrets to making great pizza dough but most importantly, I remember him for his smile.

Hopefully now, he can finally take a vacation. He hasn't had one in 10 years!

Manchester Boxing Ring for At-Risk Kids Needs Help to Keep Its Doors Open PDF Print E-mail

MANCHESTER CT: 14 year-old Mykquan Williams says he looks exactly like his father, or at least that's what people tell him. He can see the resemblance in pictures but he doesn’t remember his father. Mykquan’s life had just begun when his father’s life ended so violently.

“I was just one week old when my father was murdered in Hartford,” said the soft-spoken boxing champion who attends school at Noah Webster in Hartford. “I think I do look like my Dad,” he said through a smile on his face just as bright as his eyes.

Mykquan or Mike, as his friends call him, is just one of the 70 boys and girls at the Manchester Ring of Champions Society or ROCS. As a two-time ringside world champion, the future looks bright for Mykquan, thanks to his long time coach and other leaders at  the ring which gives at-risk youths a fighting chance. Now, the ring itself is fighting to keep its doors open. Leaders are appealing to the community to buy more tickets to its dinner-show fundraiser on May 12th.

“If we don’t sell all the tickets, it's going to be tough to expand and keep the doors open," said Kate Nicolas, Director of Advocacy for The Manchester Ring of Championship Society. Kids pay a 10 dollar a month fee but no one is ever turned away. “We’ve become home for a lot of these kids and a place to go. We want to continue our mission to change lives, but we’re going to have to sell more tickets to do that.”

The fundraiser is called The Earle Everett Memorial Boxing tournament & Dinner (named in honor of the late legendary Cop and boxing Coach Earle Everett.) Tickets are on sale now for $45. You can buy them by calling 860-712-2616 or online by clicking here!

The event will be held:

Saturday, May 12, 2012 starting at 5 PM
at Nomads, 100 Bidwell road, South Windsor, CT.

Nicolas says they’ve sold 100 tickets so far and need to sell at least 100 more. The 45 dollar ticket includes:
5 PM~cash bar and free Hors d’oeuvres
6 PM-Dinner & Dessert
Bouts begin at 7:30 PM.
Boxers from ROCS including Mykquan, will be the featured fights. Legends from the Boxing world will also be there to cheer them on including, Peter Manfredo, Marlon Starling and The First Lady of Boxing, Jackie Kallen.

“We need this money to get us through the Summer,” said long-time boxing coach Paul Cichon. “The money will help pay for the gym and to take the kids to tournaments.”

The event is also paying tribute to the late Manchester Fire Marshal Tom O’Marra and firefighters in general for their role in the community. Because of this, the first 200 people through the door will receive free 2012 Guts & Glamour calendars featuring Connecticut female firefighters. (a 20 dollar value) The calendar was named one of top 10 best in the world.

Sundlun and Sindland PDF Print E-mail
Written by Shelly Sindland
Monday, April 23 2012

Will the real Shelly Sundlun step forward, or is it Kara Sindland, or is it neither or both?

Am I confusing you yet?

The right answer is: Kara Sundlun and Shelly Sindland; Sundlun is Lithuanian in origin, Sindland is an old Norwegian name dating back to the 400s.

I actually had one newspaper reporter tell me that for years, he thought we were the same person.

Before Kara started at WFSB-TV, she sent a resume to my former employer. I remember my news director telling me, "I can't hire a Sundlun, I already have a Sindland."

Back during my TV days, having two women in TV news with similar last names caused some confusion, probably more on my end than Kara's end. We would always say that if people could see us standing next to each other, they would see that I am a foot taller and not get so confused.

Saturday night we had that opportunity at charity event~Cris Radio's Dancing In the Dark fundraiser.

Now you can see what we we're talking about.

Attorney Kevin C. Ferry donates $10,000 to honor the memory of Mellissa Andrew. PDF Print E-mail

Clients in the News.

Attorney Kevin C. Ferry

(Anne Marie MacFaddin/Mellissa's Mother, Attorney Kevin. C Ferry, Principal Jason Beaudin/Avon High School)

Avon, Connecticut: Mellissa Andrew was only 17 years old but already thinking about the future. She wanted to be a special education teacher and help others to learn sign language, a way she and her family used to communicate with her little brother Aidan who has down syndrome. To Mellissa, entering the field of special education was more than just a career, it was her calling.

Tragically, that calling was cut short when Melissa lost her life in a car accident. The Avon High school cross country runner was killed in a car accident in Harwington on August 5, 2010.

“When I heard someone I went to school with lost a daughter about the same age as mine, I was devastated,” said attorney Kevin. C. Ferry. “I needed to do something.”

Ferry, who grew up with Mellissa’s mother Anne Marie MacFaddin, is the gold sponsor of the charitable foundation created in honor of Mellissa called “Smiles for Mellissa.” Ferry, who lives in Avon but whose practice is in New Britain, donated $10,000 to the fund. Some of that money will be used to teach sign language classes at Avon High, helping Melissa’s passion and calling to continue.

“This is all about honoring my daughter’s life” said Anne Marie. “We are very grateful to Kevin for helping us keep my daughter’s memory and mission alive.”

Ferry’s contribution will also help fund a golf tournament created in honor of the teenager. The Mellissa Ann Andrew Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on June 3, 2012, at 1:30 PM at Shotgun Scramble, Farmington Woods Golf Club.

You can register for the tournament by going to www.cmac.golfregistrations.com
